Abstract

Companies everywhere are being told to bring artificial intelligence (AI) into their HR departments. AI is used to screen resumes, predict who might quit, run performance reviews, and answer employee questions. But putting these tools to work is not as simple as buying software and turning it on. This paper looks at how that process plays out in two very different industries: information technology (IT), where workers are used to computers and companies have money to spend, and apparel manufacturing, where most workers do physical, low-paid jobs and have far less say in how they are managed. Using recent studies, news reports, and real examples from India and Bangladesh, the paper finds that both industries run into similar problems, like messy data, biased algorithms, and workers who do not trust the system, but the size of the problem is very different. IT companies mostly worry about lawsuits, fairness, and keeping employees informed. Garment factories worry about basic things like paying for new equipment, training workers who have never used a computer, and what happens to people who lose their jobs with almost no safety net. The paper ends with practical suggestions for both industries.
