Abstract

Cricket has evolved from a colonial sport into one of India's most influential cultural and sporting institutions. Although men's cricket traditionally received greater recognition and institutional support, women's cricket has experienced remarkable growth over the past three decades through policy reforms, improved infrastructure, increased media attention, and the dedication of outstanding players. Among them, Mithali Raj stands out as one of the most influential figures in the history of Indian women's cricket. This paper examines the evolution of women's cricket in India with particular emphasis on Mithali Raj's contribution to its development and professionalization. It explores her journey from an emerging cricketer to one of the world's most accomplished batters and captains, highlighting her leadership, consistency, and international achievements. The paper argues that Mithali Raj's contribution extends beyond her records and awards. Her leadership and performances significantly enhanced the visibility and credibility of women's cricket, inspiring greater participation among young girls and encouraging institutional support. Her legacy has played a vital role in transforming women's cricket from a marginalized sport into an integral part of India's sporting landscape, while contributing to women's empowerment and gender equality.
