Abstract

Background The rapid transformation of the global workforce and the increasing demand for skill-specific competencies are challenging the dominance of traditional degrees. Micro-credentials, supported by digital badges, have emerged as flexible alternatives that validate targeted skills, enabling learners to pursue life-long, modular, and just-in-time learning opportunities. Objectives This paper aims to explore the role of micro-credentials and digital badges in advancing life-long learning, enhancing employability, and bridging the gap between higher education and industry needs. It also seeks to critically analyse challenges of standardization, recognition, and equitable access. Methodology The study draws on a review of recent global policy frameworks, institutional practices, and case studies from higher education and workplace training contexts. Comparative analysis is used to highlight opportunities and barriers across diverse socio-economic settings. Findings Micro-credentials and digital badges offer learners flexible, personalized pathways while supporting workforce readiness. They enhance employability by providing portable and verifiable recognition of skills, complementing formal qualifications. However, challenges persist regarding quality assurance, interoperability, and inclusivity, particularly in resource-constrained environments. Implications Micro-credentials represent a transformative shift in education and professional development. When effectively integrated, they can democratize access to learning, align education with labour market demands, and strengthen global life-long learning systems. Policymakers, institutions, and industries must collaborate to address recognition and equity concerns to realize their full potential.
