Abstract

The present study examined the guidance needs of adolescents in relation to selected demographic variables, namely gender, type of school, and area of residence. A descriptive survey method was employed on a randomly selected sample of 200 secondary school students from government and private schools of Ludhiana district. Data were collected using the Guidance Needs Inventory (GNI) developed by Dr. J. S. Grewal (1999). Statistical techniques such as mean, standard deviation, and t-test were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that most adolescents (69%) exhibited average guidance needs, while 31% showed either high or low guidance needs. Significant differences were found in guidance needs based on gender and area, whereas no significant difference was observed between students of government and private schools. The study highlights the need for comprehensive guidance and counselling services, particularly for girls and students from rural areas, to support their academic, personal, social, and vocational development. The findings may assist educators, counsellors, and policymakers in designing effective school guidance programmes.
