A Study of Loneliness Among Secondary School Students in Relation to Their Adjustment

Abstract
The societies of today have become increasingly modern and technologically advanced, however, paradoxically this has led to the prevalence and intensity of loneliness to increase. This was analysed through a deliberate research. This paper intends to bring forth the issues of loneliness and adjustment among secondary school students as observed in the research. The objectives of the study were to study loneliness and adjustment among secondary school students in relation to gender, location, type of family and to explore relationship between loneliness and adjustment. The Descriptive survey method of research was used and data was collected using following research tools (a) UCLA Loneliness Scale (version 3) by Daniel W. Russell (1994); (b) Adjustment Inventory for school students by A.K.P Sinha & R.P. Singh (1995).The sample of the study was 200 secondary school students selected from various secondary schools of Hisar District. The results of the study indicated significant mean difference in loneliness among secondary school students in relation to their gender and type of family whereas no locale-wise significant mean difference was found in loneliness. On the other hand no significant mean difference was found in adjustment among secondary school students in relation to their locale and type of family, but gender wise significant mean difference was found in adjustment. The study further revealed that there was a strong negative correlation between both the variables. It is evident that when the scores of loneliness increase, the scores of adjustment decreases and vice-versa.
